How Much Would an AI Headshot Really Cost You?

Updated: Feb 3

AI headshots sound like a great deal. I’ll be honest—I’ve never used one myself, but I’ve been tempted. You upload a few photos, pay a small amount, and suddenly you have a very polished, professional-looking image. For many people, especially small business owners, that feels like an easy solution.

At first, an AI headshot looks efficient and budget-friendly. There are so many options available, from free tools to more expensive plans, all promising a “professional headshot” without stepping into a studio. On the surface, it feels like a smart shortcut.

But the real question is: is it really saving you money?

Most AI headshots look good at first glance. Clean background, nice lighting, confident posture. But often, the image looks like you… and also not like you. The image can feel more like a character than a real person. AI struggles to preserve what makes you uniquely you.

Now let me tell you what a real, human headshot experience looks like.

In my photography studio, I’m the human behind the lens. A professional headshot session usually takes about an hour. We go through two to three outfit changes, and there are hair and makeup touch-ups along the way. My job is not just to take a photo—it’s to guide you, talk to you, and help you relax so your personality comes through naturally.

I’m not superhuman. I’ve just spent years learning how to photograph people in a way that feels authentic and confident. That experience matters.

Recently, I photographed several small business owners who needed headshots for their websites and social media. They are well-known in their community. When people see their professional headshots, they immediately recognize them. The image builds trust because it feels real.

Now imagine someone discovering your business for the first time online. They see your website or social media profile and click on your headshot. If that image looks overly polished or slightly artificial, it can create doubt. In today’s AI-heavy world, people are more cautious. If a photo doesn’t feel human, it can raise questions—Is this business real? Can I trust this person?

That missing “twinkle in the eye” can make a bigger difference than we realize.

So while an AI headshot may seem affordable, the real cost can show up in lost connection, reduced trust, and missed opportunities. A professional headshot is not just about looking good—it’s about being recognizable, approachable, and real.

For the past two years, I’ve photographed countless small business owners and executives, helping them show up online with high-quality, professional headshots that truly represent who they are.
