How to Pose for Professional Headshots

Updated: 4 days ago

Thinking about updating your professional headshots? Let me give you a few examples on how to pose for your professional headshots. The key is posing does not need to feel awkward or overwhelming. The best poses are the ones that feel natural to you.

As a photographer, my main job during a headshot session is to guide posing and expressions so you feel confident and comfortable. But having a few simple pose ideas before your session can help you relax and enjoy the experience more.

Professional headshot posing should never feel forced or uncomfortable. If one pose does not work, just try another. The right pose for you lets your natural expression shine through. Not every pose will feel like you right away and that is okay. During my headshot sessions, you can review your images as we go, so you can see what feels best.

Some clients feel nervous about posing because they do not want to look stiff or unnatural. I use soft posing which means gentle adjustments that feel intuitive and relaxed. If your shoulders look tense, we reset and try something that feels more like you.

Let us jump into some easy professional headshot poses you can try.

Pose One - The Classic Head and Shoulders

This is your go-to pose. Stand or sit up straight, turn your body slightly away from the camera, and lean in a little. You will look confident, open, and approachable.

Pose Two - Arms Crossed

Crossing your arms gives a confident vibe without being unapproachable. A small smile makes this pose feel warm and professional. This works especially well for corporate professionals, lawyers, executives, and leaders.

Pose Three- With a Prop

Using something simple like glasses, a pen, or a phone adds character and gives your hands a purpose. This is perfect for designers, consultants, coaches, and thought leaders.

Pose Five - Lean Sideways

A gentle lean against a wall or chair can make you look relaxed and confident. Make sure the background is clean and well lit to keep the focus on you.

Pose Six - Lean In

Leaning slightly toward the camera while seated or standing creates a friendly, approachable vibe. It also helps elongate your posture naturally.

Pose Seven - Looking Away

For personal branding or social media use, looking away from the camera creates a thoughtful and authentic feel. This pose is less formal but works great for storytelling.

Pose Nine - Fun and Playful

A big laugh, a quirky look, or something unexpected adds personality to your session. The best professional headshot poses are the ones that feel like you. When your body feels natural, your expression follows, and the camera captures confidence, professionalism, and approachability.
