What Makeup Should You Wear for Your Professional Headshot?

Writer: Miriam MezaMiriam Meza

When it comes to professional headshots, the goal of makeup isn’t to transform you—it’s to enhance your features and make sure you look like the best version of yourself. As a professional makeup artist and photographer, I know firsthand that the right makeup can make a huge difference in how polished and confident you appear in your headshot. But don’t worry—this isn’t about heavy glam or over-the-top looks. It’s about looking like you on your best day. Prepping Your Skin for Your Headshot

A great makeup look starts with healthy skin. To ensure your makeup sits smoothly:

  • Stay hydrated and exfoliate your skin the day before your photoshoot. This helps create a fresh, even canvas for makeup application.

  • Arrive with clean, moisturized skin to avoid dryness or patchiness in photos.

Keep It Matte and Natural

When it comes to makeup for professional headshots, less is more—but that doesn’t mean no makeup at all. The camera and lighting can wash out your features, so subtle definition helps bring them back.

Start with a matte or satin-finish foundation that evens out your skin tone without looking heavy. Avoid anything with shimmer or a dewy glow—professional lighting already creates highlights, and too much shine can make you look sweaty rather than fresh.

Eyes: Defined, but Not Overdone

Your eyes are the focal point of your face, so enhancing them naturally is key. Stick to neutral, matte eyeshadows in tones that compliment your eye color—soft browns, taupes, and warm grays are universally flattering. Avoid shimmer or glitter, which can reflect too much light and create unwanted shine in photos.

Even if you don’t usually wear mascara, consider applying some for your headshot session. It helps open up the eyes and add definition. If you like a bit more drama, a lash lift, natural-looking false lashes, or lash extensions can be a great option—just steer clear of overly thick or dramatic falsies unless that’s part of your everyday look.

The Right Lip Color Matters

Lipstick pulls everything together. Stick to shades that enhance your natural lip color without overpowering your features. Soft pinks, mauves, or neutral tones work well, while overly bright or dark shades can sometimes be distracting.

A matte or satin finish is best—glossy lips tend to reflect too much light and can make your lips look uneven in photos. If you have a favorite lipstick, bring it with you for touch-ups or ask your makeup artist to use a shade you love so you can reapply as needed.

Executive Headshot

Cameras and lighting can wash out features, so a little extra definition ensures you still look natural in the final images. If you’re working with a makeup artist, communicate your preferences clearly. If you never wear makeup, don’t feel pressured to do something extreme—a light, natural application can still enhance your features without making you feel like a different person.

That’s why my professional headshot sessions always include complimentary makeup application. With my experience as a makeup artist, I know exactly how to create a look that’s both flattering and camera-ready while still feeling true to you.
