I originally wrote this post a couple of years ago, and when I came back to update it, I realized how much has changed.
The way we work and show up online has changed dramatically, especially with the rise of AI. We are surrounded by images that look polished and perfect, but they do not always feel real.
That is one reason I believe an authentic professional headshot matters more than ever.
There is something reassuring about seeing a real photograph of the person you are connecting with on LinkedIn, a company website, or a professional profile.
Not an AI version of you. Just you, photographed well.
I decided to keep the original photographs from this post, even though they were taken about two years ago. Looking at them again reminded me that good photography does not go out of style.
So what makes a great modern professional headshot?
It should look like you.
The lighting, expression, clothing, hair, makeup, background, and posing all matter. But the most important part is that you still recognize yourself when you see the final image.
Many of my clients tell me the same thing:
“I’m not photogenic.”
“I have no idea how to pose.”
